Nexus International School Singapore

ISTimes Global: (00:00) Ivan Federoff here. We’re here with uh Renee from Nexus International School. Welcome.

Nexus International School: (00:05) Hi.

ISTimes Global: (00:06) Uh you’ve come from Singapore. Uh we uh we actually just uh were talking about our different uh seasons between Japan and uh Singapore. Uh but uh I would I would love to know more about uh your school and about your uh school population.

Nexus International School: (00:22) Yeah, so it’s uh it’s a great school uh situated very centrally in uh in Singapore. Uh at the moment we’ve got uh 1,527 learners. Um and they are pretty much evenly spread between primary and secondary. We have a very vibrant community of over 60 different nationalities. Um and um for whatever reason, we we don’t have any one nationality more than 15%. So it’s a very diverse community. Um the nationality with the most kids are at the moment the British with about 14%. Um but in every class you have in either primary or in secondary, you will have about 10 to 12 different nationalities in a in in a class. So it’s a very, very diverse population. When it comes to our teachers, we have about 20, 25 different nationalities. Um, most of our teachers are uh about about 60%, 65% are either British, Australian or from uh the UK. We have some American teachers, Canadian teachers, we have some Singaporean teachers. And our language teachers are from either Spain, France or from from China. So, it is a fantastic community in uh in Singapore.

ISTimes Global: (01:36) That’s a very uh dynamic group, very uh diverse.

Nexus International School: (01:40) I’m from Denmark myself, so so

ISTimes Global: (01:36) Which which I I was not able to guess. Uh so what do you think you have such a large population too? What do you think attracts people to uh your school?

Nexus International School: (01:52) Um for a variety of reasons. Uh our diversity is one. Uh secondly, I would say that we have a very, probably something specific to Nexus, but we have a very, very strong swimming program.

ISTimes Global: (02:04) Okay.

Nexus International School: (02:05) So in in all of primary, from nursery kindergarten to the end of year six, swimming is part of our curriculum every single week. Um so they will have normal PE or sport, but on top of that, they also have a swimming lesson. Um which means that um of all the international schools in in Singapore, we um we uh we punch well above our weight when it comes to our uh our swimming results. And we offer swimming scholarships as well. Um and I would also say that we have a very, very strong community, sense of community. Um so we look after our students quite well, both pastorally and of course also academically. Uh it’s very important when you come to a new country that you um that you know that your children are going to feel safe, they’re going to feel wanting to come to school. And that’s a big part of of sort of the induction to school life is to make sure that they have a buddy, make sure that they have somebody who is um uh aligned with, you know, what kind of interests I have as a student, so that there’s an instant connection.

ISTimes Global: (03:08) That’s excellent. I I I was just thinking, um for the graduates of uh your school, what do you think they come out uh having or uh remembering most about the school, uh besides uh uh the swimming program, which sounds very dominant. But besides that, is Yeah. What is something that they think?

Nexus International School: (03:27) I think I think that the number one thing that our graduates uh end up with um is a sense of the relationships that they’ve forged through their time at school. Uh and that is uh relationship with the teachers that have guided them through the process of of, you know, getting to graduation and you know, off to university or wherever they want to go. And then it’s a sense of of that relationships that they’ve forged with their peers as well. It’s really, really strong. Some of the things that the learners when we talk to them after they’ve gone to university, that they feel was one of the uh the things that that really set their mark is um the sense of uh of relationships and community that they have. They had a a very nurturing environment where they could learn.Yeah.

ISTimes Global: (04:10) Well, I I’ll look forward to seeing some of your students at some swimming Olympic event in the future.

Nexus International School: (04:15) Well, funny you should mention it. Uh so uh the recent Olympics uh in Paris, we did have a uh a former student who participated for Spain.

ISTimes Global: (04:28) Excellent.

Nexus International School: (04:29) And um she graduated from Nexus I think two years ago and she’s on a scholarship in Virginia in the US. She represented Spain and we we all cheered for her in the 100 and 200 meter backstroke.

ISTimes Global: (04:42) Oh, you must have been so proud.

Nexus International School: (04:42) We were very proud, very proud. Now, she did not make the final. Uh but in the 100 meter backstroke, she came ninth, which meant that she was the first um uh replacement should anybody in the main field not be able to compete. She would have been the first one to be in the in the finals race, but we still uh think Carmen did very, very well and we’re very proud of her.

ISTimes Global: (05:08) Uh shout out to her.

Nexus International School: (05:11) Yeah.

ISTimes Global: (05:12) Um well, it was very very nice to meet you and hearing more about Nexus uh International School. Thank you.

Nexus International School: (05:15) Cool.

ISTimes Global: (05:16) Thank you so much. Thank you.

Nexus International School: (05:17)You’re welcome. Thank you. Bye bye.

ISTimes Global: (05:18) Bye.

Nexus International School: (05:19) Bye bye.
