We spoke with Nadine.

ISTimes Global: (00:00) Hi, I’m here with Nadine

NUCB International College (Nadine): (00:02) at the NUCB International College.

ISTimes Global: (00:04) Welcome to the Expo.

NUCB International College (Nadine): (00:06) Hello, thank you. Nice to see you.

School History

ISTimes Global: (00:08) Can you tell us a little bit about your school’s history and background?

NUCB International College (Nadine): (00:13) Yeah, so actually, uh our school belongs under the same organization as NUCB, the undergraduate school. So that’s the Nagoya University of Commerce and Business and we actually share a campus with them. So the university has been around since 1935, but our school uh was just opened about three years ago. So this year is actually going to be our first graduating cohort.

ISTimes Global: (00:41) Congratulations.

NUCB International College (Nadine): (00:41) Thank you. Yeah, so that’s basically our history.

Academic Life

ISTimes Global: (00:47) Great. Can you tell us a little bit about academics at your school? What’s learning like there?

NUCB International College (Nadine): (00:52) Yeah, so our school follows the IBDP diploma program. So we are a high school only. So it’s uh three years. So grade 11, 12 is the IB diploma and then grade 10 is what we call the pre-IB. So our school is actually also Article 1 school in Japan. So students will graduate from our school will both uh IBDP diploma and the Japanese high school diploma. Yeah.

Extracurricular Activities

ISTimes Global: (01:21) Cool, nice. How about extracurricular um activities at your school? What’s it like outside of the classroom for your students?

NUCB International College (Nadine): (01:30) Yeah, so our school is a boarding school. It’s a full boarding school. So students uh have opportunities in the boarding house for extracurricular activities as well. So usually in the nighttime, there are some sports activities or uh uh things uh usually in the university campus, we share our sports facilities with them. So on the weekends, there are, for example, kudo, Japanese archery or judo available for our students. And then about once a month, they’ll have uh boarding excursions as well. And during the weekday, we have something called the engage program. So that’s your regular uh after school extracurricular activities. Uh but the unique thing in our school is that we change those every three months. And we actually have a lot of uh student councils and one student council is the engage council. So they decide what the extracurriculars are by you know, asking the other students what the demand is. And of course, some things are only available in summer, some things are only available in winter. So outdoor sports is more summer, but this changes uh every three months.

A Day in the Life at NUCB International College

ISTimes Global: (02:43) Nice. Keep it interesting and different. What’s a day in the life of a student at your school?

NUCB International College (Nadine): (02:50) Yeah, so as a full boarding school, they’re basically at school all day. And uh our dormitory is right across from our school building. So it’s a very close walk. So usually they would wake up about 7:00 a.m. or 7:30, something like that. And they would have breakfast at the dormitory and they have to get to school by 8:30 for the home room. So then they have classes and they would go back uh to the dorm for lunch and then go back to class. And then classes are until around 3:30 and then that’s when you have the extracurricular activities. And then there’s also something uh called uh subject support time. So this is about an hour every day where the teachers will be available uh for students to go to them and ask for any help. So there’s always uh teachers waiting in different rooms and then students can go to them and if they don’t know how to do their homework or anything like that, they can ask for help. And then they go back to the boarding house for dinner. After dinner, there’s free time and that’s the only time that they have access to their mobile phones. So the rest of the day, their mobile phones are kept by the house supervisors. So they have their phones for about one and a half hours and then it’s back to self-study time. So it is a very uh rigorous academic environment.

ISTimes Global: (04:18) Thank you so much for your time.

NUCB International College (Nadine): (04:19) Thank you.

ISTimes Global: (04:01) Awesome. Well, thank you so much everyone for your time.
