We spoke with Eric Maslin (Vice Principal).
ISTimes Global (00:01): Hi, this is the International School Times Global here at the Osaka Education Expo. I’m here with Eric. Eric, could you introduce yourself and your school?
One World International School (Eric) (00:10): Okay, hi. I’m Eric Maslin. I’m the Vice Principal at One World International School. Uh, we’re a school that’s only three years into development and I started as a home room teacher in grade four three years ago. So I was a home room teacher for two years, but this year I’ve taken on the role of Vice Principal. Um at the moment, we have both uh the primary PYP, the IB PYP program and MYP. So they’re both uh PYP’s in candidacy at the moment and heading towards verification, and uh MYP is just started its journey. So, yeah, very exciting sort of things. We started with uh 20 students three years ago and now we’re at about 300 roughly. So growth is very very uh extravagant and and fast, but yeah, it’s a it’s exciting times, yeah.
Academics
ISTimes Global (00:59): Sounds like an amazing school. Can you tell us about academics at the school?
One World International School (Eric) (01:03): Yep. So in uh the the primary years, we follow the IB PYP and of course that’s based around inquiry-based education and making sure that we cater for every individual and teach things to the students such as the learner profiles and approaches to learning is uh govern everything that we do. Um also, one of the things that our school is really proud of is we have an assistant uh AEP program, so Academic English program where any student that comes to our school, whether they have 100% fluency or or no English at all, we can cater for them through the AEP program by taking those students out of mainstream English classes and giving them the the more tailored course or more tailored uh education to their needs. So, yeah, anybody can at least apply to come to our school. Yeah.
School Culture
ISTimes Global (01:53): That sounds like a great program. Can you tell us about your school’s culture?
One World International School (Eric) (01:58): So, the most important thing about our school is that all the kids are, well, you know, the all all our kids, we believe are extremely happy. We have uh four core values, so global engagement, creativity, community and inclusivity, and mindful independence. And we try to base all our uh activities and community interactions based around those four pillars. We do things in a very sort of international way. We have a spring carnival every year, a winter event, and try to transplant that like American or that foreign or western sort of school experience into Japan.
Future Memories
ISTimes Global (02:35): I see. As children graduate from your school, what are some of the memories that you hope they take away from their time at you have?
One World International School (Eric) (02:42): So, like for me personally, like I just like seeing them them grow as people firstly, but of course seeing them grow academically and um in my case, I started in a in a school classroom with, you know, four kids, and now I’m seeing that class grow to 20, and they’ve moved on and some of those kids came with zero to no English and now they’re taking part in the MYP program with, you know, near fluency or good enough English to to participate fully in that program. And yeah, it’s just amazing to see that growth like and being involved in making people happy and and seeing kids grow up in positive environments, yeah.
ISTimes Global (03:23): Thank you so much for your time, Eric. It was great.
One World International School (Eric) (03:24): Thanks. Thanks, man.
