BST begins ‘Exchange Month’ with Showa Schools

The British School in Tokyo (BST) starts the ‘Exchange Month’ project with Showa Junior-Senior High School and Showa Elementary School in June. BST has shared the campus with Showa schools since 2006, and this is the first time that the three schools collaborate on such an intensive exchange project in one month.

The ‘Exchange Month’ project in June 2022 was a pivotal initiative that brought together students from The British School in Tokyo (BST), Showa Junior-Senior High School, and Showa Elementary School for a series of collaborative programs. This unique exchange aimed to enhance language development, provide insights into the differences between British and Japanese education systems, and foster a spirit of teamwork in addressing global challenges such as sustainable development.

One of the cornerstone programs of this initiative was Operation Green, which set out to inspire 100 students—30 from BST and 70 from Showa Junior-Senior High School—to actively participate in sustainable development and environmental protection efforts. The project began with an initial workshop on 16 May, where students from both schools engaged in a meaningful dialogue with Ms. Yo Watanabe, Administration Manager of the international NPO Earth Company. The focus of this discussion was the creation of a sustainable campus at Showa, sparking a sense of responsibility and innovation among the participants.

Building on the momentum of the first workshop, a second session was held on 1 June. During this workshop, the students successfully identified and established three critical action categories for the programme: Waste Management, CO2 Reduction, and Foundation, which encompasses team management, environmental philosophy, public relations, and other essential aspects. These workshops not only provided practical knowledge but also encouraged the students to think critically about their role in promoting sustainability within their communities and beyond.

Overall, the Exchange Month project served as an invaluable experience for the students, offering them a platform to collaborate across cultures, develop essential skills, and contribute to meaningful, real-world initiatives.

Feedback from the students:

This opportunity to work with both schools is really valuable. I would like to be involved and put into practice what I have been working on with my family at home with my school and BST.

I think the earth is in danger now. We will take the lead in what we can do to save this planet.
