We spoke with Ed Matsuda (Country Manager).

ISTimes Global (00:02): This is the International School Times Global at the Osaka Education Expo. I’m here with Ed. Ed, could you introduce yourself and your school?

Crimson Global Academy (Ed) (00:10): Yes, hi everyone. Uh my name is Ed Matsuda. I am the country manager for Crimson Global Academy, um here in Japan. Um Crimson Global Academy is an online international school. We operate under the global curriculum such as AP, Advanced Placement, A-levels, International GCSE. Students are able to attain uh US high school diploma as well, and also combine A-levels with AP if you’re aiming for US um university enrollment. So, we’re very flexible. Uh we have a group class setting, also a one-on-one teaching setting, and also some of the students can um receive um on-demand um online uh recorded session as well. And you can combine those. So, for example, if you really want to have a dialogue in English classes, then you’re, you know, group classes will be a great um class. But if you’re kind of not sure of math and you need some, you know, care, then maybe one-on-one class is. On the other hand, if you’re really advanced and you want to accelerate your learnings, uh math 101 can also be a great option as well. And you can combine those. So for here at Crimson, we really want to tailor our school, the learning um for to to meet student learning needs as well. So we’re very flexible to maximize students’ academic potential.

Academics

ISTimes Global (01:27): That sounds great. Could you tell us a bit about academics at your school?

Crimson Global Academy (Ed) (01:32): Yeah. Sure. Um as I explained, um it’s uh um you know, we operate under an international curriculum. Um a lot of our students because it’s a one-on-one setting, small classroom settings, are really achieving in their academics. Uh for example, in the recent um A-levels exams, a lot of schools, it’s probably, you know, 30% of the students are taking um A and above in their A-levels um exams. But here at Crimson Global Academy, more than half of the students were um scoring A and above at the recent A-levels um exam. Um even for advanced placement as well, um a lot of students achieved fives. So we’re not just thinking about how to um kind of recruit over-achieving students. It’s more so we believe that all students can achieve, right? Uh with the right level and the right, um, you know, teaching uh pedagogy as well. Uh for example, the group class setting or the one-on-one setting, depending on your needs. So if you have the right setting, we believe that students can achieve academically.

School Culture

ISTimes Global (02:29): Great. How about your school’s culture? What’s that like?

Crimson Global Academy (Ed) (02:32): So yeah, I think a lot of our students really want to aim for top US and UK schools. Um but, you know, at the end of the day, I think the best-fit school thinking is very important. So it’s not necessarily that students are aiming for Harvard or Stanford. Uh a lot of are, uh but it’s not uh saying that we only limit our students for highly achieving students. We have a diverse uh range of students attending at our school. So I think first of all, most of our students want to achieve, right? And also kind of try to find their best-fit um environment so that can continue thriving um in a setting. So, first uh point is that. Uh I think the second point is, I think we have a lot of entrepreneurial mindset students as well. So students, um because they really want to work on their own project, uh that’s why they come to Crimson Global Academy. Or we have students who really want to thrive as athletes, like Olympian, they want to become Olympians. And they’re not able to secure enough time for their own projects or even their sport as as well. So at Crimson Global Academy, because it’s uh online, um you know, tailor-made um environment, uh students can learn very effectively and efficiently. So you don’t really have to be in school for six hours a day. At the end of the day, it’s like three to four hours. And you don’t also have commute time. So you can secure additional five or six hours. And most of the students use that, those five or six hours to really work on their own project, sports, arts, and so on, to really, you know, kind of develop on their talent. And that’s their uniqueness at the end of the day. So I would say our school culture itself is really fostering that individual uniqueness. Um and you know, not just saying that but also having the structure to support that um think uh philosophy as well.

Future Memories

ISTimes Global (04:15): It sounds amazing. Great. Um lastly, could you tell us about some memories that you hope that graduates from Crimson Academy have after their time at your school?

Crimson Global Academy (Ed) (04:24): Yeah, so I think um at the end of the day, and also this is, you know, coming from our recent graduates, um they say that they, you know, didn’t not compromise their learning and what they’re passionate about. Right? Usually, um there’s a lot of compromise happening in the school setting because um you work on your own project, but uh you know, that, you know, you have to spend that time and maybe sacrifice some of the study hours as well, right? If you’re an athlete and you’re traveling around the world, you also have to sacrifice school, right? So we want to avoid that. Um and a lot of our students are actually avoiding it. So their memory is, “I was able to build on my passion, you know, work on these, you know, global competitions, but at the same time, not sacrifice my academics.” Which at the end of the day is very important if you think about university enrollment because US universities focus not only on academics but also um they watch uh they look uh see your extracurricular leadership activities as well. So I think that balance is very important and I think we’re able to deliver on that philosophy to our students by listening to their comments.

ISTimes Global (05:28): All right. Thank you so much for your time, Ed.
Crimson Global Academy (Ed) (05:29): Yes, thank you very much.
