Riseisha Junior and Senior High School
ISTimes Global: (00:00) Hello, we are here with Ryan from uh Riseisha. Uh middle school and and high school.
Riseisha Junior and Senior High School: (00:07) Yes, that’s right.
ISTimes Global: (00:08) Uh, I would I’d love to learn more about your school. Uh your your school from my understanding is it’s a Japanese school with an strong international component to it. So please That’s right.
Riseisha Junior and Senior High School: (00:21) Yes, that’s right. So, Riseisha is a um Japanese private school based in Osaka, Northern Osaka in Toyonaka City and over 100 years history. And uh we have lots of international programs uh that supplement the core program, which is a Japanese curriculum by the Monbusho, the Ministry of Education of Japan. So I’m one of the teachers there. I’m a native English speaker from uh America. Um but we have other teachers, uh very good English teachers that teach English in English. And uh we have, as you mentioned, international programs. For example, we have an optional program for students to um take courses in English with a high school in US. And that is called a dual diploma program, which is described in our brochure.
ISTimes Global: (01:15) So it’s a uh so it’s a supplementary program with that if they take that, they would of course get their Japanese diploma recognized by the Japanese government. But then with this supplementary program, they would also be getting a US diploma.
Riseisha Junior and Senior High School: (01:29) That’s right. And that gives them more options for the future. So they get a regular Japanese high school diploma plus a US high school diploma, which enables them to enter, of course, universities in the United States and elsewhere more easily than just having a a Japanese diploma.
ISTimes Global: (01:45) Right. Now, uh you also have um a route that um some that some students take to go to Australia? Is the Australian?
Riseisha Junior and Senior High School: (01:53) Yes. Yes, that’s right.
ISTimes Global: (01:54) Tell us more about that.
Riseisha Junior and Senior High School: (01:56) So, uh actually I’m connected to Riseisha, but also I am an instructor of a course in Kyoto. Um and that is described in our materials here. It’s called UNSW Foundation Studies. And this is a nine-month course that students uh take courses in English and the curriculum is set by the university in Australia. And after completing this course, they can enter any of the top universities in Australia, University of Sydney, UNSW, University of Melbourne and so forth.
ISTimes Global: (02:30) Oh, wow. That’s that’s excellent. Um I’ve also heard that your school won the baseball championship in 2019.
Riseisha Junior and Senior High School: (02:38) That’s right. You must have uh quite a uh sport program.
Riseisha Junior and Senior High School: (02:42) That’s right. Very diverse. So not just academics, but also extracurricular and very strong sports. We’ve had um graduates of Riseisha go on to professional to be professional um sports um athletes, baseball and soccer. And from next year, we’re going to introduce a rugby program. So we uh were visited just a couple weeks ago from um professional rugby players from New Zealand came to visit us to help us establish the rugby program.
ISTimes Global: (03:10) Well, if uh if someone’s going to help you with the rugby uh program, it should be someone from, you know, New Zealand.
Riseisha Junior and Senior High School: (03:17) Yes.
ISTimes Global: (03:17) Uh that’s excellent. So I I so what would you say would be what kind of student or family would uh choose your school, especially for the international uh uh school route.
Riseisha Junior and Senior High School: (03:30) I think it would be someone who wants to keep all their options open. I think uh an international a pure international school that offers all courses in English is is a fine option, but in that type of scenario, many of those students don’t go to Japanese universities. So I think our course will enable students to go to Japanese universities and if they wish to go abroad. So it kind of gives them more pathways available. So we support students based on what their goals are. And of course, going to Japanese universities, there’s nothing wrong with that either. Um I actually I have one of my children went to a Japanese university, so I’m I’m not against that. But um even Japanese universities are emphasizing English. So they students need to prepare themselves. Um the language skills are really, really important. And they get extra, I think um uh the ability to enter a Japanese university increases with English ability. You know, having better English will enable them uh put them in good standing and admissions to even Japanese universities.
ISTimes Global: (04:39) Yes, of course. You know, and this is a uh it’s a question that I ask everyone. Um what do you think the graduates uh say once once they leave? What is what’s seared into their memory of experiences the most that you believe once once they leave uh your school?
Riseisha Junior and Senior High School: (04:57) I think we have a very strong sense of community at our school. And uh I think there’s lots of different programs for people with different interests. As I said, there’s sports, um but we have other sort of cultural things that we do. It’s very strong. And there’s connections with uh other schools. So we have a lot of international students coming. We do exchanges. And recently, um we actually have homestay opportunities for families of our students to um serve as homestay for students who coming from abroad, from India, from we have a student from India right now. We had students coming from New Zealand, uh Malaysia and so forth in the future. So it’s really a strong community and they have connections with sort of international schools and and students from abroad.
ISTimes Global: (05:51) That sounds great. Uh thank you so much there Brian. I uh love to hear more from about more in the future. Thank you so much.
Riseisha Junior and Senior High School: (05:58) Thank you. Thank you very much.
