Stamford American International School

ISTimes Global: (00:00) We are here with Kliara at Stamford American International School Booth here at the Osaka International School Expo. Welcome.

Stamford American International School: (00:08) Thank you.

ISTimes Global: (00:10) Your school is situated in uh

Stamford American International School: (00:12) Singapore.

ISTimes Global: (00:13) Singapore. Exactly. So tell us a bit about your uh uh school and your uh community that you’ve built over the years out in Singapore.

Stamford American International School: (00:21) Of course. So Stamford American was founded in 2009. We’re in an IB World school. It means that from two months old to 18 years old, uh we care for students. We offer the PYP, MYP and of course IBDP. So what is different at Stamford American? Well, first of all, we have 75 nationality present in campus. We have uh for example, 6% of Japanese. We offer so many languages and also uh bilingual program in Mandarin and Spanish, but we have also Japanese again. Uh in terms of university progression, what is incredible is that we also have university alumni from Stanford in Japan, at the best university, but you can go to the UK and US, you will find them. And what I would say is great at Stanford American is firstly, um the community, the parent community is very strong. You will see them doing hikes on the weekend, having meetings together at the school. Uh we have also an incredible number of activities for the students, 350 co-curricular activities. So from robotics to math, to sport, um to competition in the region, music, whatever you want, the student are free to create them and to participate in them. And lastly, uh one of the only international school in Singapore to offer the individualized pathway. It means the students are also free to take the IBDP or to create their own diploma program with the 24 credits required to graduate among IB courses, advanced placement, BTEC that has focus on design, music, and drama, or also Stanford courses that are focus in business like marketing, consumer math, entrepreneurship. So we have the possibility for the student to personalize their graduation diploma and be one of the top applicants for university. And the result can’t lie. We have 95% of our students who get the first or second choice of university.

ISTimes Global: (02:43) Oh, that’s that’s very interesting. And um if uh if you were one of your uh students at your school, uh what do you think you would say your typical day was uh uh at your school?

Stamford American International School: (02:56) So what I love at Stanford American is that all our students start all their classes in the morning with one hour with the teachers to first of all, assess how they’re doing. And after that, assess what is their goal for the day. For example, what do I want to focus on for today in terms of academics, in terms of also personal development. So the students start their morning in the mindset and how can I be better. And of course, it has a huge consequences on how they will be during the classes. And Stanford also valorize a lot active participation. So the students are very active during class, they ask question, curiosity, critical thinking and problem solving are very rewarded. And the best will be that at the end of the day, at 3:30, they go to all their activities, music, sport, swimming, whatever they want. And so they end also their day with a lot of fun and they come back home, they’re still tired, but happy tired.

ISTimes Global: (03:58) Excellent. Uh thank you for running us through uh that day. I I’ve looked at your um brochure a bit and you seem to have some beautiful facilities.

Stamford American International School: (04:08) Yes.

ISTimes Global: (04:09) Um can you tell us about some of the activities, sports, school activities?

Stamford American International School: (04:14) So I will tell you, we have two campuses. Our first campuses is the early learning village where we have a swimming pool. We have the classroom who are always shared indoor and outdoor. We have six playground that are covered and thematics with for example playground around music, one around physics elements. So gravity for example. And at our Woodley campuses, we have three swimming pool. We have one rock climbing wall. We have also a golf simulator academy.

ISTimes Global: (04:44) Really?

Stamford American International School: (04:45) Yes, because we have a huge focus on businesses. So we want the student even at a young age.

ISTimes Global: (04:51) Let’s say it’s time for that golf meeting.

Stamford American International School: (04:52) Exactly. Uh, we have a huge theater 500 seat because we um also want to focus on drama. It enable the students to be better at public speaking, at leadership also to organize the play and also self-confidence. Then we have um our dance studio clubs. Uh we have a two big arena, one multisport field. So whatever you want at a school, I think Stamford has it.

ISTimes Global: (05:22) Excellent. Excellent. And um Singapore isn’t always on the radar for maybe Japanese internationals uh uh families. But uh what do you think um the school uh offers to attract, let’s say the Japanese

Stamford American International School: (05:39) Yes, of course, of course. Uh so first of all, Singapore as a destination is great for Japanese. It is also very safe, very clean. Uh it’s easy to navigate the street and the public transport system is incredible. And Stanford American is centrally located, so it’s very practical. Then for the the Japanese parent and community, what we offer is uh the parents are free to come to the school with their own lanyard and they meet at the parent coffee. We have a nationality also parent association. So if you go to our brochure, you will see the Japanese parent community is very strong. They do hiking club together, cooking club together. And we also offer English support for the parents. So that is very practical. And for the students, well, we also offer Japanese courses from middle school onward that is focused on history and kanji acquisition.

ISTimes Global: (06:39) Really?

Stamford American International School: (06:39) It’s really good because what we want is that the student is free to go back to Japan and attend universities in Japan too. And our alumni are now present at Todai, Keio, Sophia University.

ISTimes Global: (06:53) That’s very exciting. I think that’s one of the things about the Japanese community when they go abroad, their children tend to have to go to Saturday school to learn all their kanji, but it’s great that uh your school offers that.

Stamford American International School: (07:05) We want to have them the opportunity of course going to the United States or the UK is still possible. We have a lot of graduates there. But what is incredible is the possibility to come back and be able to take the test of this great university and to succeed at it.

ISTimes Global: (07:22) Well, thank you for sharing about your wonderful school.

Stamford American International School: (07:24) Yes, thank you.
