Forums for Diversity in Thought and Opinion in the MYP

For the last couple of weeks, we’ve challenged each grade to hold their own class discussions. They choose a subject and a chairperson and figure out the best way to organize themselves. Some classes use the Harkness method they have learnt in class, some like to have the chair direct them and others use their experience of Model United Nations.

Grade 12 students help the classes run the discussions and are there to help out, guide or direct if necessary. It’s a good experience for them when younger students look to them for help.

Many of the topics for discussion were driven by the learning students are doing around our Global Leadership Project where we are trialing and developing a learner-driven, self-improvement project for schools.

Other groups just decided to discuss ideas that are important to them such as, ‘what is beauty’ and ‘Is globalisation doing more harm than good?’ The main aim though of this activity is: ‘Can you support the person leading you to bring your group success?’
